The market opportunity for linear drive optics

A key theme at OFC earlier this year that surprised many was linear drive optics. Its attention at the optical communications and networking event was intriguing because linear drive - based on using remote silicon to drive photonics - is not new.

"I spoke to one company that had a [linear drive] demo on the show floor," says Scott Wilkinson, lead analyst for networking components at Cignal AI. "They had been working on the technology for four years and were taken aback; they weren't expecting people to come by and ask about it. "

The cause of the buzz? Andy Bechtolsheim, famed investor, co-founder and chief development officer of network switching firm Arista Networks and, before that, a co-founder of Sun Microsystems.

"Andy came out and said this is a big deal, and that got many people talking about it," says Wilkinson, author of a recent linear drive market research report.

OFC highlights a burgeoning coherent pluggable market

A trend evident at the OFC show earlier this month was the growing variety of coherent pluggable modules on display.

Whereas a coherent module maker would offer a product based on a coherent digital signal processor (DSP) and a basic design and then add a few minor tweaks, now the variety of modules offered reflects the growing needs of the network operators.

Tom WilliamsAcacia, part of Cisco, announced two coherent pluggable to coincide with OFC.

The Bright 400ZR+ QSFP-DD pluggable form factor is based on Acacia’s existing 400ZR+ offering. It has a higher transmit power of up to 5dBm and includes a tunable filter to improve the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) performance.

Acacia’s second coherent module is the fixed wavelength 400-gigabit 400G ER1 module designed for point-to-point applications.

“I can understand it being a little bit confusing,” says Tom Williams, vice president of marketing at Acacia. “We have maybe five or six configurations of modules based on the same underlying DSP and optical technology.”

The CDFP 400 Gig module

• The CDFP will be a 400 Gig short reach module
• Module will enable 4 Terabit line cards 
• Specification will be completed in the next year

A CDFP pluggable multi-source agreement (MSA) has been created to develop a 400 Gigabit module for use in the data centre. "It is a pluggable interface, very similar to the QSFP and CXP [modules]," says Scott Sommers, group product manager at Molex, one of the CDFP MSA members.

Scott Sommers, MolexThe CDFP name stands for 400 (CD in Roman numerals) Form factor Pluggable. The MSA will define the module's mechanical properties and its medium dependent interface (MDI) linking the module to the physical medium. The CDFP will support passive and active copper cable, active optical cable and multi-mode fibre.
